What are magnesium and nitrogen?

Magnesium reacts with nitrogen to create solid magnesium nitride.

It is possible to make magnesium oxide products by combining nitrogen with NH3 gas in this reaction if it is not pure. It is preferable to react in dry NH3 gases.

The magnesium scraps can be placed in either a porcelain vessel or a sintered-magnesia container. You will install the boat inside a porcelain tube. A T-shaped tube connects to one end of the porcelain tub. You can fill one end with dry ammonia, while the other can hold nitrogen. An end of the porcelain tub is attached to a U shape tube. This tube is filled half with small CaO and half with small KOH flakes. The absorption device is made up of two cylindrical flasks that contain dilute sulfuric acid and absorbs the gas released from the reaction tubes. You should not place the tube of your first absorption bottle beneath the surface of dilute sulfuric acids to avoid back suction.

Allow the porcelain tubes to dry until they no longer produce bubbles. The temperature should be raised to 800850. After heating the magnesium powder, it will become hot. The pressure of the NH3 must be higher than the ambient pressure in order to prevent the reaction from reversing. Turn off the NH3 once the reaction is complete. Keep the temperature at its original level and pass N2 through the reactor for an additional 1.5 hours. This will remove the NH3*Mg3N2 which has been adsorbed to Mg3N2. It is highly liquescent, so it must be kept in a dry container. Magnesium nitride may also be made if the magnesium belt was burned in air.
