Niobium and Silicon are mixed together in the graphite melting furnace. The graphite is heated slowly. After the metal reaches a temperature of 1000, hydrogen is added, causing the temperature to rise to between 1400 and 1900. The reaction then continues. Niobium pentoxide or silicon metal can be added to the reduction furnace and reduced at 1400°C for 30 minutes. This is niobium silicide.
