Magnesium Diboride (MgB2) is an inorganic compound. It’s a gray-colored insoluble solid. It is an ionic chemical with hexagonal crystal structures. Intercalation compound containing alternating layers boron and magnesium. Because of its 39 K superconductivity (-234degC), this compound is interesting. MgB2 has a composition that is different than most other transition-metal-based superconductors at low temperatures.

Magnesium diboride can be transformed into a superconductor by heating to a temperature that is close to 40K (-233degC). This superconductor has a transition temperature that is nearly twice as high than other superconductors. Its actual temperature ranges between 20-30K. Liquid neon gas, liquid hydrogen or closed-cycle refrigeration can reach this temperature. This is a simpler method than using liquid helium in cooling niobium-alloys (4K), which can be costly. Magendium boride retains its superconductivity even after being doped in carbon, other impurities or any other material.

Different from incomplete combustion through a glass oxide coating that stops the diffusion oxygen, magnesium diboride burns entirely in either oxygen or an organic mixture. Magnesium boride is therefore proposed for use as an engine fuel. MgB2 can also be used as an enhanced explosive and propellant.
