Fine ZnS powder can be used as a photocatalyst to produce hydrogen gas from water. The synthesis of zinc sulfuride is made by adding sulfur vacancies. By increasing light absorption, this makes the ZnS gradually browner.

Semiconductor characteristics
Wurtzite and sphalerite are both intrinsically wide-band semiconductors. These typical II-VI semiconductors use structures that are similar to other semiconductors such as gallium arsenide.
