Magnesium boride was known by scientists for more than 50 years. But no one ever tested its superconductivity, or whether it would conduct electricity flawlessly without resistance if cooled down to temperatures near absolute zero. It was only in 2001 that Jun Akimitsu, of Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo, announced that he had discovered that magnesium Diboride becomes superconducting below 39 degrees Kelvin. (- 389 degrees Fahrenheit). This temperature is nearly twice that of the current intermetallic conducting materials. It was a shock to the world when the announcement came out. Scientists from around the world were scrambling for ways to confirm and duplicate the Japanese findings.
Magnesium diboride can be converted to a superconductor by bringing it up to temperatures slightly below 40K. (-233 deg. C). Its transition is almost twice as high compared to other superconductors. The actual operating temperature of this material is between 20-30K. You can reach this temperature by using liquid neon, hydrogen or a freezer with a closed circuit. These methods can be cheaper and easier than using liquid helium in the industry to cool niobium alloys (4K). Once doped by carbon or other impurities magnesium boride maintains superconductivity at the same level or higher than niobium in the presence a magnetic field and a current.

The actual operating temperature of the superconductor is between 20 and 30K. For cooling, we can use liquid hydrogen, liquid neon or closed-cycle refrigeration to achieve this temperature. The methods used to cool the alloy are much simpler and cheaper than those currently being used by industry to cool niobium. If it’s doped with impurities like carbon, then it can be maintained superconducting as well as niobium.
What is the production process of Magnesium Diaboride MgB2 Poudre ?
The MgB2 preparation is primarily a reaction synthesis using magnesium powder and mixed boron.
MgB2 can be obtained by mixing 99.9% amorphous boron with 99% magnesium powder, at a ratio of 1:2. Then it is pressed into small balls before being heated in high-pressure Nitrogen.
At the moment, the most commonly used method is mixing amorphous boron and magnesium according to stoichiometric measurements (or adding excessive magnesium), and then putting them in a sealed refractory container (such tantalum), and putting them in a glass tube for vacuum pumping. Then sintered for 14 hour at 700950.
