When pre-alloyed (Fe-3.44 % mass %Cu), iron powder and copper powder are mixed, the maximum rate of expansion is lower. However, compactions made from (Fe-7.18%) iron alloy powder and Copper powder only shrink when copper powder has been added. In all sintered billets, liquid copper was found to penetrate the interstitial spaces between solid grains. The expansion behavior of iron and copper compactions with the same initial copper powder content changes as the copper content increases.

This two-step method is useful for many applications, including improving mechanical, optical and thermal properties by mechanically altering the surface of the material.
