How is Neodymium Nitride (NdN) Powder made?
1. The dehydrated chloride solution is dissolved into methanol. It is then electrolyzed by using graphite (D = 12mm), and mercury as the cathode. The electrolytic vessel is equipped with glass joints that have multiple grinding hole for inserting the graphite anode at the bottom. To ensure a current of between 1 and 2A, a voltage of about 40V is required. The size of current is dependent on the distance (10-20mm) between the cathode and anode. The temperature and concentration of rare earth chloide are about 20. In the electrolytic reactions, cathode surfaces are larger and therefore 1 current is used, corresponding to a current density of 0.04 a/cm2. Magnesium boride was known by scientists for more than 50 years. But no one ever tested its superconductivity, or whether it would conduct electricity flawlessly without resistance if cooled down to temperatures near absolute zero. It was only in 2001 that Jun Akimitsu, of Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo, announced that he had discovered that magnesium Diboride becomes superconducting below 39 degrees Kelvin. (- 389 degrees Fahrenheit). This temperature is nearly twice that of the current intermetallic conducting materials. It was a shock to the world when the announcement came out. Scientists from around the world were scrambling for ways to confirm and duplicate the Japanese findings.
Magnesium diboride can be converted to a superconductor by bringing it up to temperatures slightly below 40K. (-233 deg. C). Its transition is almost twice as high compared to other superconductors. The actual operating temperature of this material is between 20-30K. You can reach this temperature by using liquid neon, hydrogen or a freezer with a closed circuit. These methods can be cheaper and easier than using liquid helium in the industry to cool niobium alloys (4K). Once doped by carbon or other impurities magnesium boride maintains superconductivity at the same level or higher than niobium in the presence a magnetic field and a current.

A-form is a powdery yellow color, while b is a powdery orange-red. It is slightly soluble. In water, it is soluble. Ammonia, however, has a slight soluble. But it is used more often as a substitute for impurities, in zinc ores with similar structures, such as sphalerite, and wurtzite. This is because it’s a simple compound to separate and purify. Its bright yellow pigment was used in 18th-century yellow paint called Cadmium Yellow.

Like zinc sulfide, cadmium sulfide has two crystal forms. Structures with a hexagonal wurtzite pattern (presented in Greenockite minerals) or cubic zinc mixed patterns (presented in Hawleyite minerals) are both more stable. Cadmium and sulfur have four coordinates in both forms. There is a form that has a NaCl salt structure.

Cadmium-sulfide, a semiconductor with a direct energy gap (2.42 eV), is a direct-bandgap semiconductor. The close proximity of the bandgap of cadmium sulfide to visible light wavelength gives it a colourful appearance.
The hexagonal polymorph is also pyroelectric.
CdS crystals can be used in solid-state Lasers as gain mediums.
