How is Neodymium Nitride (NdN) Powder made?
1. The dehydrated chloride solution is dissolved into methanol. It is then electrolyzed by using graphite (D = 12mm), and mercury as the cathode. The electrolytic vessel is equipped with glass joints that have multiple grinding hole for inserting the graphite anode at the bottom. To ensure a current of between 1 and 2A, a voltage of about 40V is required. The size of current is dependent on the distance (10-20mm) between the cathode and anode. The temperature and concentration of rare earth chloide are about 20. In the electrolytic reactions, cathode surfaces are larger and therefore 1 current is used, corresponding to a current density of 0.04 a/cm2. In an N2 atmosphere, the impurities were cleaned with methanol. The unreacted Mercury is then distilled into spherical tub 2 from spherical pipe 1, and the spherical is disconnected. The composition of the amalgam in tube 1, depends on the temperature (200 300 deg C) at which mercury has been distilled.
2. In glass tubes, rare earth metals in contact with mercury are 20 – 30 times more than that of rare earths.
