Calcium silicide (also known as calcium disilicide) is an inorganic silicide. The molecular weight of calcium silicide (96.2514g/mol) is CaSi2. Melting point is 1033degC. It can be off-white to dark gray. It is not soluble in water. However, it decomposes in hot water when it meets calcium hydroxide and hydrogen. It decomposes when heated water is added. It is flammable, and can spontaneously ignite in the air. Calcium silicide may be produced by reacting Ca and Si at 850degC in an inert gas atmosphere. It’s a solid that can range from white to dark gray and black, with a melt point between 700degC and 935degC. What is Calcium Silicide CaSi2 Powder produced?
1. By melting calcium and elemental silicon, a silicium with a higher purity can also be produced. It is necessary to carry out the process in two steps.
The first step is to mix the pure silica powder and calcium shavings evenly. Next, pour the CO2 into a quartz reaction tube and quickly place the hard biscuit porcelain vessel into it. The boat is heated to 1000degC. In just a couple of seconds, the mixture melts. Remove the porcelain vessel, and the CaSi immediately coagulates and is crushed. CaSi, a porous material with a metallic sheen and a gray-lead color, is made of a block.
The second step is to mix CaSi evenly with the Si powder calculated, place it in a Nickel boat and heat it up at 1000degC under an H2 stream. It is necessary to heat it for 15 hours because the final phase of the reaction occurs slowly.
2. CaSi2 can be prepared by mixing pure CaO, silicon and appropriate fluxes CaF2 & CaCl2 at 1400degC. The silicon element is then added.
