The nickel boride catalyst is prepared through the reaction between sodium borohydride and nickel chloride, NiCl2. It is suitable for hydrogenation, desulfurization, dehalogenation, hydrolysis, and reductions of nitro and functional groups.
The nickel-boride catalyst prepared by reaction of NiCl2 & NaBH4 may also be used in desulfurization reactions. The Raney catalyst, which is used for the desulfurization process, can be replaced by this one, as it has a higher rate of yield.
The nickel boride catalyzes the desulfurization of thioamides as well as sulfides to yield hydrocarbons.
In the presence of nickel-boride, aliphatic nitro compound can be converted to amines.
NiCl2/NaBH4 is also capable of dehalogenation, hydrolysis and the reduction of many abromoketones or dibromoketones to olefines.
